M5 and M5 Competition
The M5 is typically a daily driver that also happens to make 600+ horsepower. It accumulates miles faster than weekend M cars, meaning more cumulative debris exposure. The full-size sedan body has a large hood and wide fenders — lots of surface area facing oncoming debris.
Recommended coverage: Full front kit at minimum. Full front plus rocker panels and door edges for vehicles that see daily highway commuting.
X3 M and X5 M / X6 M
The M SUVs ride higher than sedans, which changes the debris exposure profile. Higher ride height means debris hits the lower bumper and rocker panels at a different angle, but the hood and upper fender areas still catch highway gravel. The X5 M and X6 M have massive front fascias with large intake openings — more surface area to protect.
Recommended coverage: Full front kit plus rocker panels. The SUV ride height makes rocker panel protection more important than on the sedans.
X Series Daily Drivers: X3, X5, X7
You don’t need an M badge to benefit from PPF. The standard X3, X5, and X7 are among the most popular vehicles on Houston’s roads, and they all have the same soft BMW paint.
X3 and X5
These are the volume vehicles — school runs, highway commutes, weekend trips to the lake. They see relentless daily use and accumulate debris damage steadily. The X5 in particular has a wide front end that catches everything coming at it.

X7

BMW Individual and Frozen Colors: Special Paint Demands Special Protection
This is where PPF becomes essential, not optional.
Frozen (Matte) Finishes
BMW’s Frozen colors — Frozen Black, Frozen White, Frozen Dark Grey, Frozen Portimao Blue — use a matte clear coat that cannot be polished. Regular clear coat can be corrected and polished to remove swirl marks and restore gloss. Matte clear coat cannot. Any damage to the surface is permanent unless the panel is repainted.
That means:
- A rock chip in Frozen paint requires panel repaint ($1,500-3,500 per panel)
- Swirl marks from improper washing cannot be polished out
- Chemical etching from bird droppings or tree sap is permanent
PPF for Frozen finishes uses matte PPF — film with a satin/matte finish that matches the factory texture. Applying gloss PPF to a matte car would ruin the entire look. Matte PPF protects the underlying finish while maintaining the proper appearance.
We cannot emphasize this enough: if you own a BMW with a Frozen finish, PPF should be installed as close to day one as possible. Every mile driven without it is a risk to a finish that cannot be repaired.
BMW Individual Colors
Individual colors like Tanzanite Blue, Frozen Pure Grey, Dravit Grey, and the rotating selection of special-order colors are expensive to apply from the factory ($5,000-10,000+ upcharge) and even more expensive to match if a respray is needed. Body shops that can accurately match BMW Individual colors in the Houston area are rare, and the cost reflects that scarcity.
PPF protects the original factory paint so color matching never becomes an issue.
The BMW Paint Stack: Understanding What You’re Protecting
BMW’s paint system follows the modern European standard:

On metallic colors, the contrast between the damaged area and surrounding paint makes even small chips highly visible.
PPF adds 6-8 mils of additional protection on top of the entire paint stack. Debris impacts that would penetrate the clear coat are absorbed by the film instead.
