10 Questions to Ask Any Detailing Shop Before You Book

By Sam Davis · · 6 min read

An Informed Consumer Gets Better Results

Choosing a detailing shop for services like ceramic coating, paint protection film, or paint correction is a significant decision, and the wrong choice can result in wasted money, damaged paint, or protection that fails prematurely. The detailing industry has a low barrier to entry, which means the range in quality between shops is enormous. At EuroLuxe Detailing, we welcome informed clients because they recognize the value of what we do. These ten questions will help you evaluate any shop, including ours, and make a decision based on substance rather than marketing. A reputable shop will answer every one of these questions without hesitation.

Question 1: What Products Do You Use and Why?

A professional shop should be able to name the specific products they use for every service and explain why they chose those products over alternatives. Vague answers like “we use professional-grade products” or refusal to name brands are red flags. At our shop, we use GYEON MOHS EVO for ceramic coating and UltraFit for paint protection film, and we can articulate the specific performance characteristics that led us to choose each. The products a shop uses tell you about their commitment to quality and their willingness to invest in professional-grade materials versus consumer-grade alternatives sold at a professional markup.

Question 2: Are You Certified by the Product Manufacturers?

Manufacturer certifications require installers to complete training programs, demonstrate competency, and meet ongoing standards to maintain their status. A certified installer has direct access to manufacturer support, warranty backing, and updated training as products evolve. Ask to see the certifications, and verify them with the manufacturer if possible. Uncertified installers may be using products without proper training, which increases the risk of application errors and may void any warranty the product carries. Certification is not a guarantee of perfection, but it is a meaningful indicator that the shop has invested in proper training and maintains a relationship with the brands they represent.

Question 3: Do You Carry Insurance?

This question surprises some vehicle owners, but it is critical. Professional detailing involves working on vehicles worth tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars using chemicals, polishing machines, and cutting tools. A shop without proper liability and garage keepers insurance puts your vehicle at risk if something goes wrong during the service. Ask specifically about garage keepers insurance, which covers damage to vehicles in their care, custody, and control. A professional shop will have this coverage and should be willing to provide proof. If a shop hesitates or cannot confirm their insurance status, that is a significant concern.

Question 4: What Does Your Facility Look Like?

The physical environment where work is performed directly impacts the quality of the result, particularly for ceramic coating and PPF installations that require controlled temperature, humidity, and dust levels. Ask whether the shop has enclosed, climate-controlled bays, what temperature and humidity ranges they maintain, and what dust control measures are in place. If possible, visit the shop before booking. A clean, organized, well-lit facility with enclosed bays and proper ventilation is a strong positive indicator. A cluttered workspace with open bay doors and standard garage lighting suggests the shop is not set up for the precision work that professional coatings and film require.

Question 5: What Is Your Process Before Application?

The quality of preparation directly determines the quality and longevity of any coating or film installation. Ask the shop to walk you through their process from vehicle intake to final delivery. A thorough process should include multi-step decontamination, paint correction if needed, paint depth measurement, surface inspection under proper lighting, and a clean preparation step immediately before product application. If a shop describes their process as a quick wash followed by coating application, the product is being applied on a surface that is not properly prepared, and the results will reflect that shortcut.

Question 6: How Do You Handle Pre-Existing Damage?

Every vehicle has some level of existing imperfection, and how a shop addresses this tells you about their integrity. Ask whether they document existing damage before beginning work, whether they will show you issues they discover during inspection, and how they handle situations where existing paint condition may limit the achievable result. At EuroLuxe Detailing, we photograph and document every vehicle at intake and discuss any findings with the owner before proceeding. A shop that does not document existing conditions is exposing both you and themselves to disputes about whether damage occurred during their care.

Question 7: What Warranty Do You Offer?

Warranty terms vary significantly between shops and products. Ask for the specific terms in writing, including what is covered, what is excluded, and what maintenance requirements you must follow to keep the warranty valid. Some shops offer impressive-sounding warranty durations but attach conditions that make claims virtually impossible. Others offer shorter but more comprehensive coverage that actually protects you. The product manufacturer’s warranty and the shop’s installation warranty may be separate, so understand both. A confident shop will present their warranty terms clearly and explain them in plain language without evasion.

Question 8: Can I See Examples of Your Work?

Portfolios, before-and-after photos, and client reviews are all valuable, but nothing beats seeing recent work in person. Ask whether the shop has any vehicles currently in process or recently completed that you can inspect. Look at the edges of PPF installations for clean tuck lines and absence of lifting. Examine ceramic-coated surfaces under direct light for uniformity and absence of high spots. Check window tinting for bubbles, debris, and clean edges around defroster lines. A shop that takes pride in their work will welcome this scrutiny because they know their installations hold up to close inspection.

Questions 9 and 10: Timeline and Communication

Ask how long the service will take and what communication you can expect during the process. Quality ceramic coating and PPF installations are not same-day services. A full front-end PPF installation typically requires a full working day, and ceramic coatings need curing time before the vehicle can be released. A shop that promises same-day turnaround on services that physically require more time is cutting corners somewhere. Also ask how they will communicate with you if they discover issues during the work, if timelines change, or if they recommend additional services. Clear, proactive communication is a hallmark of a professional operation.
