PPF for the Tomball commute on Highway 290

By Sam Davis · · 6 min read

Highway 290 between Tomball, Cypress, and the beltway is a chip factory. Construction joints, gravel trucks, and 70 mph following distances put impacts on the hood and bumper that a wax never had a chance against. We see the same pattern on trucks and luxury SUVs that live on that drive: a clean car at delivery, a peppered leading edge by the first oil change.

Paint protection film is the physical layer. We install UltraFit, cut for the vehicle, in a climate-controlled bay. The film takes the strike. The clear coat underneath does not.

Where 290 actually hits the car

The leading edge of the hood, the front bumper, the mirror caps, and the area just behind the front wheels collect most of the damage. Partial front coverage handles the nose. Drivers who sit in the left lane behind dump trucks usually want the fenders and the A-pillars included, because debris kicks wider than the center of the bumper.

Headlights haze from the same sandblasting. Film on the lamps is a separate decision. If the lenses are already cloudy, correction or replacement comes before film, or you seal the haze in.

Film is not a coating, and you may want both

A ceramic coating makes the car easier to wash and adds gloss. It does not stop a rock. UltraFit film stops the rock and can carry a coating on top so bugs and tar release. A lot of 290 commuters book both: film on the impact zones, ceramic coating on the rest of the paint. That split matches how the road actually treats the car.

If the hood is already chipped down to primer, film will cover the chips but it will not make them disappear. Touch-up or a localized repaint has to happen first if you want a uniform surface under the film. We will tell you that on the inspection instead of filming over damage and calling it done.

Daily driving after the install

Give the film the cure window we quote. Do not run it through a tunnel wash the first week, and do not pick at an edge. After that, the commute is the point. You should stop noticing the film and start noticing that the nose still looks like the day you left the studio.

Edges are the thing to glance at during a wash. A lifted corner on a daily driver is a repair, not a failure of the whole panel, if you catch it early. Bring it back. Do not trim it with a razor in the driveway.

The studio is at 11701 Holderrieth Rd in Tomball, which puts the shop on the same side of the county as the 290 and 249 drives. Call (936) 292-6056 to book the inspection before the next construction season adds another layer of chips.
