New Car Protection Checklist: What to Do in the First 30 Days
Day 1-3: Assessment
Don’t Let the Dealer “Detail” It
Decline the dealer’s complimentary wash or detail. Dealer prep crews often use cheap products and aggressive techniques that introduce swirl marks. Take the vehicle home as-is — a little transport dust is better than dealer-induced paint damage.
Document the Condition
Walk around the vehicle with your phone and photograph every panel in direct sunlight. Note any existing defects: transport scratches, dealer lot damage, paint chips, or imperfections. This documentation is valuable if you need to make a warranty claim.
Assess Your Parking Situation
Where will this vehicle live? If you have a garage, use it from day one. If you’re parking outside, protection becomes even more urgent.
Week 1: Schedule Protection
Priority 1: PPF
Paint protection film on the front end should be installed as soon as possible — ideally before your first highway drive. Every mile without PPF is a mile of potential rock chip exposure.
Priority 2: Ceramic Coating
Ceramic coating should be applied within the first few weeks. The paint is in its best condition right now. Every day of UV exposure, washing, and environmental contact degrades it slightly.
Priority 3: Window Tinting
Ceramic window tint protects your interior from UV damage and reduces heat. In Texas, this should happen within the first month to prevent interior degradation from starting.
Book All Three Together
If possible, schedule PPF, ceramic coating, and tint in a single service window. This minimizes the total time your vehicle is unprotected and is typically more cost-effective as a package.
Week 2-3: While Waiting for Your Appointment
Wash Properly
If you need to wash before your protection appointment, use the two-bucket method with a microfiber wash mitt and pH-neutral soap. Never use an automatic car wash.
Park Carefully
Avoid parking under trees (sap, bird droppings), near construction zones (dust, debris), and in tight parking spots (door dings).
Don’t Apply Any Products
No wax, sealant, spray coating, or tire shine. These products can interfere with PPF adhesion and ceramic coating bonding. Let the professionals handle surface preparation.
Be Careful Loading/Unloading
The rear bumper and door edges are the most commonly self-damaged areas on new vehicles. Be mindful when loading groceries, bags, and cargo.
Week 3-4: After Protection Installation
Follow Curing Instructions
Ceramic coating needs 14 days to fully cure. PPF adhesive needs 48 hours. Window tint needs 48 hours. Follow the specific care instructions provided at pickup.
Set Up Your Maintenance Routine
- Get the recommended wash products
- Set up a wash schedule (every 1-2 weeks for coated vehicles)
- Plan your annual maintenance appointment
Register Your Warranties
Ensure all warranties are registered — ceramic coating manufacturer warranty, PPF manufacturer warranty, and tint warranty. Keep documentation with your vehicle records.
Ongoing: The First Year
Month 3: First Detailed Wash
After the coating has fully cured and you’ve been washing regularly, do a thorough wash with a clay mitt to remove any bonded contaminants that may have accumulated during the curing period.
Month 6: Inspection
Check the coating’s hydrophobic performance, PPF edges for any lifting, and tint for any bubbles or defects. Most installation warranties cover issues in the first year — identifying them early means easier resolution.
Month 12: Annual Maintenance
Schedule your first annual maintenance appointment. Professional inspection, decontamination, and coating maintenance keep your protection performing at peak levels.
The Investment Perspective
A new vehicle loses 15-30% of its value in the first year. Paint condition is one of the largest factors in this depreciation. Vehicles with documented professional paint protection consistently command higher resale values.
The $3,000-6,000 invested in PPF, ceramic coating, and window tint on a $50,000 vehicle can preserve $5,000-10,000 in resale value over a 5-year ownership period. Protection pays for itself.
Schedule your new vehicle protection package — the sooner, the better.
