PPF Warranty: What's Actually Covered?
Why PPF Warranties Matter
A PPF warranty is your assurance that the film will perform as promised for a specific period. Premium films come with manufacturer-backed 10-year warranties, while budget films may offer 3-5 years or no warranty at all.
The warranty length reflects the manufacturer’s confidence in their product. If a company won’t warranty their film for 10 years, it’s because they know it won’t last that long.
What Manufacturer Warranties Typically Cover
Yellowing
The film should remain optically clear for the warranty period. If the film develops a yellow tint (a sign of UV degradation), it’s covered. This is the most common warranty claim and the most important coverage element.
Cracking
The film should remain flexible and intact. If the film develops cracks (from material degradation, not impact), it’s covered.
Bubbling
Air bubbles that develop after proper installation (not immediately after installation — minor bubbles during the first 2 weeks are normal and resolve as the adhesive cures) are typically covered.
Peeling
If the film lifts from the surface without external cause (no edge impact, no aggressive pressure washing), delamination is typically covered.
Staining
Premium films with stain-resistant top coats warrant against permanent discoloration from common contaminants. If the film permanently stains from normal environmental exposure, it’s covered.
What Warranties Don’t Cover
Impact Damage
The film is supposed to absorb rock chips. When it does its job and takes a hit that would have damaged your paint, the resulting dent or mark in the film is not a warranty claim — it’s the film working as designed.
Improper Maintenance
Using abrasive chemicals, aggressive brushes, or automatic car washes that damage the film’s top coat is not covered. The warranty assumes proper maintenance per the manufacturer’s guidelines.
Accident Damage
Collisions, vandalism, and intentional damage are not covered by the film warranty (though your vehicle insurance may cover replacement).
Environmental Extremes
While PPF is designed for outdoor exposure, extreme events (hail, fire, chemical spills) may cause damage that falls outside warranty coverage.
Installation Issues
This is where it gets important. The manufacturer’s warranty covers the film product. Installation quality is warranted by the installer — your detailing shop. A premium film poorly installed can fail in ways the manufacturer won’t cover because the failure is due to installation, not the film itself.
Installer Warranty vs. Manufacturer Warranty
You should receive two warranties:
Manufacturer Warranty
- Covers the film product itself
- Typically 5-10 years depending on the product tier
- Registered to your vehicle’s VIN
- Transferable to new owners (increases resale value)
- Claims processed through the manufacturer
Installer Warranty
- Covers the installation quality
- Typically 1-3 years
- Covers issues like edge lifting, improper seaming, and installation defects
- Claims processed through the shop that installed the film
Both warranties should be provided in writing at the time of installation. If a shop can’t provide both, that’s a concern.
How to Protect Your Warranty
Keep Your Documentation
Your warranty registration, installer receipt, and maintenance records should be kept together. Digital photos of the installation and any maintenance visits are helpful for potential claims.
Follow Maintenance Guidelines
Use only manufacturer-approved cleaning products and methods. Avoid automatic car washes. Follow the recommended wash frequency and technique.
Address Issues Promptly
If you notice edge lifting, discoloration, or any developing issue, bring it in immediately. Many warranty claims are complicated by delayed reporting — a small edge lift that could have been re-adhered becomes a full panel replacement when left unaddressed.
Get Annual Inspections
Professional inspections create a documented maintenance history that supports warranty claims. If you can show that the film was properly maintained and an issue still developed, the claim process is straightforward.
Warranty Transferability
Premium PPF warranties are typically transferable to new owners, which is a selling point when you sell or trade in your vehicle. A transferable 10-year warranty that has 5 years remaining adds value for the next owner and can be a negotiating point in the sale.
We provide all warranty documentation at installation, and we’ll help facilitate any warranty transfers if you sell the vehicle. Learn more about our PPF services or get a quote.
